There are millions of things that can bring you happiness in this world, but finding your own happiness is as unique as you are. No matter what is happening in your life, you can choose your own path to happiness rather than waiting around for happiness to find you.

I understand it can be hard to accept that you can choose your own path to happiness–especially if at the moment you are experiencing hard times. However, you do create your own reality after all. When you decide to change something, you will begin to change. Remember, you see the world as you are.

How does a person “choose” happiness?

“Choosing” happiness doesn’t mean you live a perfect, stress-free life without any challenges. Things happen to all people at some point in their lives, it’s a natural part of the human condition. However, even when you are experiencing challenges, you still have the power to choose happiness.

For example, if you are about to get into an argument with a friend, at that moment you are faced with a few different pathways:

  • You could choose to argue with your friend and make the confrontation worse.
  • You could say nothing and ignore them completely.
  • You could try to have a calm conversation about whatever is bringing about the argument.

Fighting with a friend is never fun, but there is a “best” option among the three listed above. Think about which path will most likely lead to happiness. Even though you’re tempted to keep arguing with your friend in this situation, you can choose happiness, even if doing so was challenging.

Life is filled with opportunities to choose your own path to happiness. Consider these examples and how you can apply them to your life.

  1. Focus on the positive side of things, everything has two sides.

Make a conscious effort to focus on the positive aspects of your life, rather than dwelling on the negative. Practice gratitude and try to find joy in the small things, even when doing so feels especially hard. This is how you can begin to choose your own path to happiness.

  1. Set intentions for yourself.

Set intentions or goals for yourself and work towards them. The journey of achieving your goals can give you a sense of forward moment the feeling of accomplishment and even boost your self-confidence, which can lead to greater happiness. The closer you see yourself getting to your goals, the better you’ll feel about your life it will increase your sense of happiness.

Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who uplift and encourage you. Invest time and effort in creating strong, healthy relationships with friends and family. When you work hard to build good relationships, you are choosing happiness for yourself.

Make time for hobbies and activities you enjoy, whether it’s painting, hiking, or playing music. Engaging in activities that bring you joy can drastically increase your mood and your sense of well-being. Having these activities built into your schedule shows that you are prioritizing more of your true self, which is a great way to choose happiness.

Prioritize self-care, including getting enough sleep, eating what makes you feel your best, having a spiritual practice, and exercising regularly. Taking care of yourself mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally can help you feel better and allow you to become more fulfilled in your life. Paying attention to all your needs–whether they’re mental, physical, spiritual, or emotional–is an excellent way to choose happiness every day.

Practice mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing, to help you stay present and focused on the present moment. Being mindful can help you appreciate the small moments of joy in your life and reduce stress and anxiety. Mindfulness techniques can be simple enough to use anywhere and anytime.
